Always move towards the future, looking to the past is frequently embarrassing

Ran 5 miles after work today. That's one more mile than I ran yesterday. Good for me, eh? Sure, but what would life be without intellectual tail-chasing? Not as much fun to read about, that's for damn sure. Let's begin:

4 miles ran in a little over 35 minutes yesterday; 5 miles in a little over 44 tonight. What changed in less than 24-hours?

Did I find a warrior spirit within, delving deep within some primal recess, tapping into some unbidden river of courage and steady-eyed determination?

Did I, like some mountaintop yogi or eastern buddhavista steady my inner spiritual ying to my outer physical yang by aligning my chi or chai or my furniture or something?

Did I summon up images of my American fore-fathers bolding plowing headlong into history with the proud determination of a headstrong and independant nation that would unleash the world-shaking powers of democratic republicanism, recklessly unfettered capitalism, and the McDouble?

No, I decided that if I could run 4 miles that I could probably run 5.

I could and that extra mile took less time to complete than this blog.

There's probably something to be said for that, but I'll be damned if I have a convoluted mental image to convey it right now.

Maybe next time.

A Midnight Modicum

Just got home from a decent jaunt on the treadmill. Almost didn't even get my not-recently-washed running shorts on at all courtesy of Rigoberto's (The Best in Greasy Portland Dining!) and the enticing lull of a 9-day vacation.

There's too much to cover in detail so I'll just ramble:

Had a very nice vacation. Congrats, Lex! It was nice to see you, family. Thanks for putting up with me when I'm cranky, you-know-who-you-are.

Maxis's 'The Sims 3' is the best parts of the previous games repackaged nicely with oodles of extras and a nice new slick sheen of seamlessness. If you liked the other games, you'll like it. I did.

Almost at the end of week 3 of my personal 'Biggest Loser Challenge'. Aforementioned vacation took a serious chunk out of my nutritional willpower, but I am redoubling my efforts and have an inappropriate about of faith that I shall be the victor.

More layoffs at work. Not unexpected, but not promising. I'm half-joking about not being employed in 6 months. I wasn't planning on staying forever, so the joke must be that I'm getting what I wished for. I think I told that one wrong...

House is mostly clean. Small victories are victories still. The girlfriend set me up with some quality dishes. Thank you, ma'am.

Weather is a wonderfully uninteresting 70-75 and partly cloudy. I couldn't ask for more. Or less.

Enrolled in summer classes. Will be nice to be back in school. Economic uncertainty is the mother of desperation.,or is it education., wait, let me start over. A community college certification in the hand is worth two part-time jobs in the... mall? Man, this is embarrassing.

Read a good book: 'Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal' by Christopher Moore. A humane and humourous life and times of the messiah through the eyes of his lifelong pal Biff. A mildly blasphemous tale about 'Prince of Peace's childhood to, well, you know, 'Lamb' hypothesizes a history of Jesus, (Joshua, if you're Hebrew), with a tale about a boy certain about his divine destiny, but not sure about how to pull the whole thing off. Oh yeah, and his titular smart-ass, true-blue and regularly unkosher best-friend that keeps the Holy Son's feet on the ground. At least until you-know-when, ;). Read it.

Night.
